Artziniega
is located in the far Northwest of Álava,
bordering on Burgos and Vizcaya, upon one
of the ancient roads stretching from the Meseta
to the Cantabrian Sea.
Under the double influence of the Nobility
of Vizcaya and Ayala, in 1272 it received
its town charter from King Alfonso X of Castile.
It is built upon
a promontory and was originally enclosed by walls,
of whose remains very little survive to the present
day.
