Berantevilla
is located to the south-east of Álava,
beside the River Ayuda.
Since ancient times it has been a place of
passage, being known in Roman times as Vetrus.
The first recorded
mention of Berantevilla dates from 1080. It was
granted the title of town by the Castilian King
Fernando IV in 1299.
It was originally enclosed by walls, although no
remains of them survive to the present day.
