Located
in the south-west of Álava, near the
border with Navarre, the town of Labraza lies
upon a promontory of a highly defensive nature.
It was founded
by the Navarrese King Sancho el Fuerte in 1196,
under the name of San Cristóbal de Labraza.
Its charters were confirmed by Felipe II, with the
privilege that it could never be transferred to
the Crown.
At present, the town retains much of its walled
perimeter, and its appearance of a bastion is only
spoiled by some structures built upon its southern
slopes.
