Located
in the region of the Foothills of Mount Gorbea
at the junction of the roads that lead to
Vitoria, Bilbao, Aramaio and Durango.
The foundation
of Villarreal by Alfonso XI took place in 1333.
It was originally a walled enclosure with a centre
laid out around three streets. All that remains
of the town walls today is a portal at the southern
end. There are also written references to the Abendaño
Castle situated at the very centre of the town.
