Oyón is located in the south-east of Álava, very close to the Community of La Rioja and in particular its capital, Logroño. It lies upon the southern slopes of a gentle hill, opposite a wide plain.
Historically, it had been a village dependent on Laguardia until, in 1643, it received its town charter from Felipe IV.
The historical centre, based around the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, is basically renaissance in origin; in addition, there remain several 18th century mansion houses, particularly next to the Plaza Mayor.
