Retes
de Tudela lies upon the southern end of a
plateau overlooking the valley of the River
Artziniega, in the north-western reaches of
Álava.
Retes de Tudela
is mentioned from 1040 onwards as one of the key
locations in the defence of the Kingdom of Navarre.
The urban layout was typical of medieval times,
with an oval shape running parallel to the ravine.
Two open spaces, not clearly laid out as squares,
gave the urbanism of Retes its special character.
